Last Weekend for the Burlington Christmas Market

The 18th and the 19th are the end of the 2011 season for the Burlington Christmas Market.  The last opportunity to sit in my chair is this Saturday 4-7pm.  Get a spot of massage for yourself in the midst of the holiday hurry, $5 for five-minute increments.

Slight Change of Plans

We have decided that it is in the best interest of the baby, and the family, to extend my sabbatical.  I will be participating in the Burlington Christmas Market for my third season in a row, but afterwards I'll be off-the-radar again until around spring.

Gearing Up

The sabbatical is going great and our baby is growing joyfully!

North Carolina Senate Bill 31 (2011)

Over the weekend a great panic developed over SB31.  It is revising the penalties indicated in NC General Statute 90-18(a) so that the penalty is the same whether you're coming from out-of-state or are in-state.  If you'd like some cross-eyed reading you can pick through the entire GS90.  Otherwise, what is causing the panic is what is NOT included in the list in 90-18(c)...naturopathy, homeopathy, aromatherapy, etc.  They are not even searchable terms throughout the entirity of the General Statutes.  What is specifically stated in 90-18(c)(1) is that "the administration of domestic or family remedies...shall not constitute practicing medicine or surgery as defined in this Article."

Another spot of panic regarding SB31 is in regards to the current situation with midwifery in the state.  There is a concern that the CPMs that are caught illegally providing services (currently only CNMs are legally permitted to provide care for pre-, peri-, and post-natal mothers) will now be prosecuted as a Class I felony.  The practice of midwifery is covered in Article 10A of GS90 and GS90-178.7(b) clearly states:   Any person who violates G.S. 90‑178.3(a) shall be guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor.  The penalty is already established within the Practice article and should not be impacted by the change to 90-18(a).

A mother on a local e-list shared the form letter response received from Senator Mansfield regarding her concerns about the midwifery question.  I feel that his response sheds some additional light, especially when he states "to ensure that this would not be misinterpreted as to delve into scope of practice issues."

Thank you for taking the time to write the General Assembly. I am the primary sponsor of this bill. This bill has nothing to do with midwives and is not trying to place midwives in prison. This bill is in direct relation to an incident that occurred in Cumberland County where a person who impersonated a physician was caught in the ER. He then went to Tennessee and did the same exact thing. Currently, if you have an out of state license and come into our state and impersonate a physician then it is a felony. If you are in state and impersonate a physician, it is a misdemeanor. This law attempts to close that discrepancy.

Before I filed this bill, I discussed this with Russ Spigett, your lobbyist, the NC Medical Board, and the NC Medical Society to ensure that this bill would not be used as a tool for a witch hunt. The NC Med Board helped change the language to ensure that this would not be misinterpreted as to delve into scope of practice issues. Mr. Spiggett did not speak against it on the Senate side during public debate, nor did any other profession where there are current scope of practice issues.

This bill has no impact on the licensure that the professional midwives are trying to get through Sen Goolsby. The bill will be amended to say that midwives will remain a misdemeanor.

Massage and bodywork therapies have their own practice act within GS90 and should not be impacted in any form by SB31, in my opinion.  I have not, however, ferreted out any information yet as to how all of this might effect my pediatric aromatherapy preparations--it has been a couple of years since I've explored and researched all of that...I would not have embarked upon providing them to others if there was risk of being against the law--and nothing in the law has changed (or is changing) except for this streamlining of practicing-without-a-license penalties.

BOV Farmers' & Crafters' Market--2011 Season

The BOV Farmer's & Crafters' Market will be held in the old Pfaltzgraf storefront of the Burlington Outlet Village (formerly BMOC) Sundays 1-5p starting 1 May.  The season will close 25 Sept.

If you're interested in being a vendor feel free to file an application with the market manager.

As previously stated, I will not be participating this season due to my sabbatical.  I look forward to being a customer though, and cannot wait to see which vendors will be there!

Sabbatical

I'm officially going on sabbatical until October 2011 due to the upcoming arrival of the latest addition to our family.

Aromatherapy preparations and Frontier co-op orders will be available upon request.  Outcall chair massage is on a very limited basis and restricted to Fridays or Saturdays only.  I will continue to be available via email for questions, consults, and orders, but please be understanding if I do not have an opportunity to reply immediately.

If you are looking for a table massage, I can confidently recommend Sheri Young at A Touch of Therapy.  She has additional training in rehabilitative massage and I've been impressed with the bio's of the other therapists in her office (though I've only been on her table thus far).  I have not yet been to their new location, but expect the quality of care to continue as before.

Birth Advocate Speaking at NCSU 3/13 @ 2pm

This Sunday, March 13th at 2pm, Suzanne Arms is coming to speak at North Carolina State University in Mann Hall, Room 307. She is coming all the way from Colorado to share her vision of Birthing The Future with us. What an amazing opportunity for our community.
On the NCSU campus, Mann Hall is on Katherine Stinson Drive. There is parking near the building. You will want to get on Pullen Drive and turn onto Katherine Stinson Drive. The parking lot is on the left side and it will be a very short walk to Mann Building. Or, you can take Dan Allen Drive to Yarbourough Dr and park in the same area. Some parking may be available right by the building. It's been many years since I was a student there! I highly recommend that you print a campus map of this area.

The building is not far from Pullen Park, which would be a great place for the kids to play while you come to hear Suzanne.

Burlington Farmer's & Crafter's Market

I will not be vendoring at the Burlington Farmer's & Crafter's Market this season--I'll be hanging out with a newborn! 

Market is slated to be inside, and the season is to run May through September.  They are chatting with another massage therapist in the area so chair will still be available--when I have any details I'll pass them along.

Ointments/Salves Now Available

BooBooGoo, a non-petroleum antiseptic ointment, and CrudEase, a non-petroleum chest congestion ointment, are available at the Burlington Christmas Market this weekend.

As of posting, there are three .75oz jars and three travel-sized drams of BooBooGoo, and five .5oz jars of CrudEase.

$11 for the jars, $4 for the travel-sized.

Knot-Suds

Two great things come from infusing oils here.  The oil infusion itself, which is used for various ointments and salves, and Knot-Suds.

Knot-Suds, a play on words regarding the fact that it is not a bubble bath, is a cheese-cloth bundle of the oil-soaked botanicals from the infusion process.  They make for a sumptuous soaking experience in the bathtub!

This round of Knot-Suds are lavender with sweet almond oil.  Each bundle is good for one soaking bath, and can be composted after use (except the ribbon tying it off).

Medications and Mother's Milk

I just found out that there is a new hotline for finding out what meds are safe while breastfeeding (from Dr. Hale's group)!! Many thanks to Alicia for sharing the info--I'm very excited about this development!

Pre-Orders for Ointment/Salves

Now taking pre-orders for chest congestion ointments and BooBooGoo. They'll be ready for pick-up in 2-3 weeks (due to the infusion process for the carrier oil used in the salves).

The chest congestion ointment is a non-petroleum aromatherapy alternative to name-brand menthol ointments. It is what I slather my spasmodic croup child's feet with when we're heading into an episode, or my family has chest-gunk going on.

The BooBooGoo is a non-petroleum aromatherapy alternative to name-brand antibiotic ointments. We've had great success with it for all sorts of scrapes and scraps--it goes traveling and camping with us and has a permanent place in our family first aid kit.

Burlington Christmas Market

Just hear those sleigh bells jingling, ring-ting-tingling too...

It's that time of year again! The Burlington Christmas Market opens today!!

The Market is being held in the old Liz Claiborne storefront, a couple doors down from Carters. Lots of returning vendors, and lots of new vendors--it's all so very exciting! Don't forget--the Burlington Christmas Market has a fan page on Facebook. Be sure to look it up and "like" it; the page will be updated regularly with events as well as vendor highlights, etc. Even the Burlington Outlet Village fan page is posting about the Christmas Market!

My chair and I will be there Fridays and Saturdays 3-7p. Still that great value of $5 per 5-minute increment.

Aromatherapy products will be available as a special order item. Most items can be delivered the next market day, or arrangements can be made during the week.

Happiest Baby class rescheduled

The Happiest Baby class that had been scheduled 13 November at Hillsborough Yoga & Healing Arts is being rescheduled for after the holidays.

They have some fabulous class offerings, and their facility is a joy to step into!  Be sure to check out their events as well!

I truly enjoyed doing chair massage at SoapWorks, Etc in conjunction with the Burlington Farmers' and Crafters' Market this year!  Thank you to all who stopped in to chat or for a snippet of massage.  My family is off adventuring in the west for the next 6-weeks or so...enjoy your autumn!!

Three Weeks of Chair Massage Left

Wanted to make a dedicated post about chair massage ending at SoapWorks, Etc in three weeks.  Labor Day Sunday (9/5) will be the last Sunday available for receiving a snippet of massage.

We'll review schedule availability when I return in November to see when we'll start back up.

Flash of Summer

Has this summer passed amazingly fast for you too?  It feels like my last post was a week or so ago, not two full months!

I'm still doing chair massage at SoapWorks, Etc Sunday afternoons, through Labor Day weekend.  I'll be taking off the remainder of September and October.

I have juicy bits of gossip that I've been sitting on for a couple of months, but cannot share until plans are more concrete.  The not-so-happy news is that I wasn't able to attend the upper extremities or the prenatal massage classes I planned to certify in this summer.  Cross your fingers that they occur in December (as currently slated).

Ooh, and for those of you gearing up for school starting...don't forget this is tax-free weekend!
