Your infant is the teacher, you are the expert, and Jessica is merely a facilitator fortifying a bridge of communication between you; she offers you tools that can make your parenting job easier and more efficient, but you determine the best uses for them.
The series is presented in five sessions. Individual sections of the body are taught each week as well as discussion topics and handouts for at-home reference. Each session is approximately one-hour and typically a week apart to provide families an opportunity to become familiar with each set of strokes, and to determine if they have any difficulties or successes to be discussed in the next session. It also allows the infant time to become familiar with the massage and to settle into this new addition to their routine.
A binder for organizing handouts, and an individual bottle of infant-safe massage oil are provided at the first session; a parent certificate is presented upon completion of the series. Please feel free to tend to your infant's needs during the classes. Feed, change, burp, wander. Don't fret over missing info...the prior week's strokes are reveiwed and Jessica is available for clarification or re-demonstration.
The IM series is available in a group class setting or a private class setting. There are benefits to both. In a group class parents have an opportunity to get out of the house to an infant-friendly activity and be around other adults. This opportunity for socialization also affords the chance to compare notes and get ideas from one another. Class directories can be provided if participants agree, and they can continue to be acquianted outside of the classes. A private, or individual, class allows for more information to be covered (four sessions instead of five) as well as has more flexibility in scheduling around the infant's routine so as to be more likely to occur during a quiet-alert state.
